A 52-year-old woman and her son were reportedly killed on Tuesday at their home in the village of Palam, southwest Delhi. The deceased, Babita Verma and Gaurav (27), were beaten to death with a dumbbell, according to the police.

While Babita is a housewife, her son used to work at Dell India in Hyderabad, but had been unemployed for a year. Babita’s husband Krishan Swaroop (55) was not at home at the time. Police said he worked as an accountant for the Indian Air Force in Palam.

The family lives in a three-story bungalow and an Army Hawaldar lives on the first floor. Police said he went to his hometown last month and returned to Delhi around 5:30 p.m. on Tuesday. He told the police that he went to his room and did not go up to see the family.

When Swaroop got home around 7 p.m., he went upstairs and found an open almirah. Although a few silver coins were missing, there were still gold jewelry and 15,000 rupees in cash. Police said Swaroop went up to the second floor to speak to his wife about it, but found her dead.

DCP (South West) Ingit Pratap Singh said they received information about the deaths at 7:08 p.m. “Swaroop told us that he found them dead in a room. We found a dumbbell that killed the two of them. We suspect that Gaurav was working on his laptop when someone hit him in the head and then attacked his mother, ”said the DCP.

Sources said the dumbbell was found in a bucket of water. According to police, the defendant tried to clean the scene and remove fingerprints. Although the motive is unknown, the police suspect that there was “friendly entry” to the house. CCTVs near and around the house are scanned.
