Los Angeles County’s director of public health said Thursday she was confident that indoor bars, nightclubs, and breweries – and their customers – were complying with a new order that requires all guests and staff to provide proof of COVID-19 vaccination .
A revised health officer regulation, expected to be enacted on Friday, requires proof of vaccination for all customers and employees in indoor areas of bars, wineries, breweries, nightclubs and lounges. All customers and employees will need at least one dose of vaccine by October 7th and a second dose by November 4th.
The regulation recommends, but does not require, vaccine verification for employees and customers in indoor restaurant areas.
The order also stipulates that all participants and employees of outdoor mega-events with 10,000 people or more must present proof of vaccination or a negative COVID test within 72 hours. This requirement, which goes into effect October 7th, affects all major outdoor sporting events and also affects major theme parks such as Universal Studios Hollywood and Six Flags Magic Mountain.
Visitors to indoor mega-events must already present proof of vaccination or a negative COVID test.
Barbara Ferrer, the county’s public health director, said Thursday that it’s worth doing everything the county can do to reduce the risk of COVID transmission, especially before the winter months.
“None of this is perfect,” she said during an online media briefing. “We’re going through a pandemic and you know, unfortunately there is no silver bullet right now, especially when there are high community transmission rates, which we are still seeing in LA County. But all we can do to reduce risk in high risk situations is appropriate. And I don’t think there is any disagreement about the basic science here. She said the county health inspectors will visit affected companies to ensure compliance, but she was confident they would abide by the rules.
