Pobjoy continues the Santa 50 penny streak

Santa Claus, as Raymond Briggs imagined him to be, is not a standard Santa Claus, but a rather grumpy interpretation of the stereotypical character.

For the fourth time in a row, the Pobjoy Mint is presenting this interpretation of Saint Nick on collector’s coins.

The new design is the second Christmas 50 penny issued on behalf of the British Indian Ocean Territory.

This famous character first appeared in 1973 Santa Claus, before joining for the second time in 1975 Santa Claus is on vacation.

He still looks like the Santa we all know and love with his traditional big white beard and red suit, but Raymond Briggs’ Santa is a down to earth worker who lives in contemporary Britain with his pets and reindeer, and with it copes with everyday housework and preparation for another Christmas party.

In the award-winning 1973 book, Santa Claus awakens from a dream of the summer sun and realizes that December 24th, Christmas Eve, is the start of his longest night work of the year. A lot of happiness arises when Santa Claus tours the world, with a few hooks on the way to bring joy to children everywhere.

The 2021 coin depicts Santa Claus holding his trusty dog with a decorated Christmas tree in the background.

The obverse bears the Pobjoy Mint image of Queen Elizabeth II.

The coins are approved by the licensor and Buckingham Palace, which is very apt since in the book
