Hundreds of treasure hunters from across the country gathered in the mountains of Utah to find a hidden chest with $ 10,000 in cash.

John Maxim and David Klein started their first treasure hunt in Utah last year during a coronavirus pandemic. The couple buried $ 5,000 in the mountains last summer but were spotted just four days after the hunt started, Klein told Fox News.

“We felt like the morale of the community was falling just because everyone was trapped in everything for a long time,” Klein told Fox. “So what’s a safe and fun way to get people out? And we just asked ourselves, how about a treasure hunt? “

“I didn’t know what the reaction would be,” he added.

This year Maxim and Klein increased their prize pool to $ 10,000. This is “your own money” and includes 10 ounces of silver coins and “fun things to put in”. He and Maxim started the hunt last week by posting a hidden poem on Klein’s Instagram account.

In just a week, Klein said to Fox, “It just explodes.”

Klein and Maxim will also post clues on social media every Friday, but those who share hunting photos will receive clues one day early Thursday.

We are already informing you that the treasure is not hidden in the ski area and not buried deep in the ground.

They also posted a map showing the general area where treasures are hidden to give people a little idea.

Klein told Fox that up to 1,000 people took part in the hunt, believing treasure hunters will come from Hawaii and Atlanta.

“There are a lot of people who love good treasure hunts,” said Klein. “It’s kind of exciting … it’s one of the few things in our society that crosses political boundaries and everything. Everyone loves the treasure hunt. “

Maxim and Klein didn’t provide any additional tips other than weekly updates, but did tell ABC4 in Utah that the chest was “as accessible as possible” to treasure hunters. Attendees were not supposed to intrude, as they also revealed in an Instagram post that the treasure was not hidden privately.

Klein told Fox that he and Maxim wanted the treasure to be hidden for the rest of the summer, but Klein added that he wasn’t sure if that wish would come true.

“I find the reaction and the community genius too powerful for that, so I’m looking forward to it for at least a few more weeks,” says Klein with a laugh.

“For us, the joy of seeing family, friends and couples, everyone just goes to the mountains to discover new places and have a great time,” said Klein. Added. “It’s fun to sit and watch thousands of people wander through the mountains trying to solve your puzzle.”
