The Mel Fisher Treasure Museum is located at 1322 US Highway 1, Sebastian, Florida. It houses exhibits related to archeology and the Spanish treasure fleet from 1715.

Taffi Fisher, the daughter of Mel Fisher, opened the museum in December 1992.

The museum includes a functioning conservation laboratory that is used to conserve artifacts recovered from the underwater world, with an observation window to view the conservation work from inside the museum.

Mel Fisher began his full-time treasure hunt career in Vero Beach when he moved there from California with his wife Dolores and their family in 1963.

Mel spent the next seven years successfully rescuing the 1715 fleet, a fleet of sunken ships laden with treasure that sank offshore, giving the area the name “Florida’s Treasure Coast”.

The Mel Fisher Treasure Museum is located at 1322 US Highway 1.

In July 1985 he discovered the main pile of the Nuestra Señora de Atocha. This is the largest underwater treasure in history. Mel’s family continues their search for the remaining cargo from the Atocha today.

‘TODAY IS THE DAY!’

Mel Fisher, a dreamer, a visionary, a legend and most of all the greatest treasure hunter in the world! Mel Fisher did what many did not – he realized his dream in his lifetime.

Every day he insisted: “Today is the day”! His mantra continues to inspire the search for the rest of the treasure of the Nuestra Senora de Atocha and the Santa Margarita, the Spanish galleons that sank during a hurricane near Key West, Florida on September 6, 1622.

Mel Fisher suffered many personal losses during his 16 year search to keep his dream alive and endured over 100 legal battles that ended in a victory in the US Supreme Court.

Mel Fisher, known for discovering the 1622 wreck of the Nuestra Señora de Atocha in Florida’s waters, found the Spanish galleon Nuestra Señora de Atocha. In 1973 he discovered silver bars from the wreck, and in 1975 Dirk, Mel’s eldest son, found five bronze cannons, the markings of which should prove to be those of the Atocha. On July 20, 1985, Fisher discovered the Nuestra Senora De Atocha shipwreck off the Florida Keys, valued at around $ 400 million. The treasure includes 24 tons of silver bars, bars and coins, 125 gold bars and discs and 1,200 pounds of silver ware.

The riches that Mel Fisher, his team, and the investors had worked so hard for over the years, were finally theirs.

On that significant day, July 20, 1985, the $ 450 million treasure cache or “Atocha Mother Lode” was found.

More than 40 tons of silver and gold were found, including over 100,000 Spanish silver coins known as “Pieces of Eight”, gold coins, Colombian emeralds, silver and gold artifacts and over 1,000 silver bars.

The vastness of the Atocha treasure is overwhelming.

On July 24, 1715, a fleet of eleven Spanish galleons and a French ship sailed from Havana, Cuba, to Spain. All Spanish ships were killed in a storm off the east coast of Florida near what is now Sebastian. Seven hundred lives and treasures worth over 14,000,000 pesos went under.

Another ship, the Atocha, suffered a similar fate in 1622. On July 20, 1985, after a 16-year search, a recovery team led by Mel Fisher found the mother vein of the Atocha from almost 370 years of exile on the sea floor … the greatest discovery in the history of treasure recovery, both in archaeological and also in commercial terms.

In the search for the Atocha, Fisher and his crew also discovered and collected treasures from the Atocha’s sister ship, the Santa Margarita and an English trading slave ship, the Henrietta Marie, as well as the fleet from 1715 at Sebastian.

When you enter the Mel Fisher Treasure Museum, you will join the millions who have seen the most spectacular collection of Spanish artifacts and treasures ever put together.
